You can never get tired of this sweet tasty Slovenian dish. It’s a perfect main dish, but it can also be served as a dessert. Here’s the easiest recipe for the tastiest walnut štruklji.
Stretch the phyllo dough over a slightly floured cloth. When you’re done stretching, the dough should be rectangular and paper thin. Grease the dough with 1 tbs melted butter.
Heat the 2 tbs butter over low. When it melts completely, add whipping cream, sugar, vanilla extract and rum, and stir well. Just before it boils, remove from heat and mix in ground walnuts. Set aside and allow it to cool for a while. After 10 minutes beat the egg white and stir it in the mixture.
Spread the filling over the phyllo dough, and leave an 1/2 border at the outside edge. Lift the cloth to roll it up and then wrap it in the cloth. Cook for about 30 minutes in a boiling water. Slice the roll it into pieces and serve hot as a main dish or a side dish.
